The doctors tried everything to stop the seizures, but after 65 days of fighting, Anthony went to be with the LORD. We praise God that we have the assurance that Ant C. (as he was known to those who loved him) accepted Christ this year when we took over 70 adults and children to The Play – A Man Called Jesus. Looking back, it was Pastor McLeod who gave the altar call at that event during the Easter season and it would be the same man only months later who would give the eulogy at Ant C.’s funeral.
To understand the influence of Anthony you would have had to be present at his funeral at Calvary Revival Church where over 2000 people were in attendance. Football teams, track teams, and athletes from all of the city attended and even Percy Harvin, Ant. C’s football hero from Florida State flew home to be there for Anthony’s homegoing.
Three of Anthony’s coaches spoke of Anthony’s great achievements in his short 13 years – how he went to the Junior Olympics in track for the past 3 years and was ranked third in the nation as the anchor in the relay team – how he was MVP of his football teams every year for the past 6 years including winning the championship for his middle school only days before entering the hospital. Even during that championship game, Anthony was not feeling well, but he gave all his heart and won the game for the team. He was never a quitter. He lived to play the game of football and his coaches were honored to have coached such an amazing young athlete.
Pastor McLeod after spending time with Crystal captured the vision of all that Anthony stood for while he was here on this earth. Anthony was about winning and giving 100%. Anthony went out to win every time! He didn’t accept mediocrity in himself or others and even during practice he was willing to go the distance and push himself towards greatness.
Prior to the funeral Pastor McLeod had spoken to Crystal about how to best honor Ant C.’s memory and she told him that she wanted him to give an altar call at the end of the funeral. Crystal, who accepted Christ in April of 2006, knew that God was the Only One who could turn around the lives of the all of the teens. Over 650 people accepted the invitation to carry the spiritual baton and live their lives for Christ 100%.
On the day of Ant C.’s funeral, there were 650 people at the altar!
