Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks, receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

Jesus in the midst of the storm

Hurricane Isabel struck Virginia Beach on September 18th, 2003. The devastation in many areas caused millions of dollars of damage and the power was out in the majority of Virginia Beach.  Most households lost $100’s of dollars of food and had to search for hours for ice to keep their remaining food cold.  At our residence, which is right across the street from Twin Canal, we were without power for almost 2 weeks and lost all of our food.

But, consider what it would be like to loose power in a low-income housing project where drug and alcohol abuse is prevalent.  Now consider having no vehicle to find ice, loosing all of your food, and having no money to go to a restaurant.  People become desperate when placed in circumstances where fear grips their minds as they question the outcome of even one night in total darkness.  The children look for comfort, but find none.  Suddenly, a gun shot is heard, then the shrill of sirens penetrates through the window, the police arrive…

This could have been the outcome at Twin Canal, but God!  Yes, Jesus did not allow the power to go out for EVEN ONE night in Twin Canal.  In all the surrounding areas there was complete darkness, but not in this community.  God placed His hand of protection upon the resident’s homes as well as their provisions.  The children laughed, played games, watched TV and read books.  Instead of fear there was peace; instead of terror there was tranquility.  Jesus brought peace in the midst of the storm.

Jesus in the midst of the fire

On Friday, September 5th our schedule was so overwhelming we thought we would never finish all the tasks we needed to do, but then…  God said, “Free up your entire schedule because I have a need that you are going to meet.”

At 10:00 a.m. Vicki received a phone call from Parkway Elementary saying that the Jenkins family who had been evicted from Twin Canal on the 28th of last month would be homeless by Saturday morning at 11:00.  Rachelle, a single mother of four, had contacted every homeless shelter within a 40 mile radius and found nothing.  Every shelter was complete filled and there was very little hope that she and her family would find somewhere to stay.

Immediately, we began praying that God would lead us and guide us in the right direction and that He would open closed doors.  The more we prayed, the more God’s hand began to move.  With less than 5 hours before being sent out on the street, Vicki once again contacted social services and urged them to give the Jenkins family an extension until Monday.  At the last minute, social services consented.  Praise God, we now had 48 hours!

Other doors began opening on Sunday morning when Rachelle and her four children attended church with us.  Prior to service, one of the members of our CARE group blessed Rachelle more than we would have ever imagined!  He told her that he had raised some money for her in case she had to stay in the hotel and that he had found a couch, fridge, washer, dryer, and clothes for the children.  He also told her that he would tow her broken car to a friend’s house and fix it for FREE!  What an awesome miracle to see God’s people rise up to help someone who was truly in need.  Doors were opening!

On Monday morning we went and packed up the few belongings that Rachelle had salvaged from the fire and just trusted that God would make a way, where there seemed to be no way.  We called a domestic violence shelter which said there was absolutely no room.  We continued talking with the intake officer and she said there was not even room in their emergency shelters.  But within 30 minutes, God opened up her heart and she decided to take Rachelle and her children even though there was no abuse happening in her family.  This was such a testimony to us to see the HAND OF GOD open closed doors!  God truly makes a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert!
