F.R.I.E.N.D.S.    Forming Relationships Is Essential in Nurturing and Directing Students

F.R.I.E.N.D.S celebrated the close of the 2002-2003 school year this month with an awesome end of the year party.  United In Him joined with the mentors to provide the kids and their parents with pizza, chips, cookies, and soda.  The party was a huge success with over 65 people in attendance including the principal and many teachers.

What do their teachers say?

Raquel has changed her attitude towards school 360 degrees.  She is really trying to do well and has exhibited signs of leadership qualities.  She tries to make positive choices and tries to influence others in a positive way.

Tishera was much more withdrawn before she was involved in F.R.I.E.N.D.S.  She seems much more confident.

Brian is now completing his homework and getting papers signed.  He also has a better outlook towards school.

Ieisha has been on time for school now for 2 months.  Her confidence seems to be picking up and she’s trying much harder in class to do her work well and complete it on time.

Amber looks forward to F.R.I.E.N.D.S.  She has also become more verbal with me in a positive way.  It’s a great program!

         What's New This Summer

F.R.I.E.N.D.S has made such a difference in the lives of the children that United In Him is developing a new program called Keepin’ it REAL.  It  will be a mentoring program for the summer and will also allow those volunteers who can not meet during the after school hours to be a part of all that God is doing in Twin Canal.

United In Him is also preparing to launch a summer tutoring program that will be individualized for each of the targeted students.  Many of the children have the potential to succeed, but are lacking basic academic skills.  This three-fold program will involve hands-on activities, one-on-one teaching, and computer work.  We will also work with the kids to acquire social skills and behavioral skills which have not been taught in their home environment.

Summer Outreach to the other neighborhoods is in the planning stages.  The Leadership Team is busy memorizing verses and taking tests in order to qualify to be a part of the outreach activities, including sharing the Gospel, praying for the people, and serving others.  It is very exciting for them to share all that God is doing in their lives.  So many adults hold back and are afraid of what others may think.  The children are uninhibited, and just love Jesus and want others to know more about Him.

In addition to the dance team, a Choir/Double Dutch Ministry Team will join the summer outreach team.   Double dutch is where the children have two jump ropes and make up rhymes and tricks while jumping.  The kids are so excited for this team to begin!  We believe that many children will not only join the team, but that through their excitement others will come and learn about Jesus and receive Him into their hearts.

Scripture of the Month

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name

under heaven given to men by which they must be saved.

                                                    (Acts 4:12)
